Check a Portuguese NIF

Works for personal NIFs and company numbers (NIPC). Type a tax number to see whether it is a valid NIF before it goes on an invoice, a contract or a form. It is checked here in your browser and sent nowhere.

A NIF has nine digits. The last one is a check digit, so most typing mistakes show up straight away.

What the check tells you

Valid means the nine digits add up the way every real NIF must. It catches almost every typo.
It does not tell you who the number belongs to, or whether it is still active. For that, ask the person or company, or look at an invoice they issued.
Numbers starting with 1, 2 or 3 belong to people. Numbers starting with 5 belong to companies.

Why it matters for a business

Your accountant needs your NIF on the invoices you receive, and your customers' NIF on the invoices you issue when they ask for it. A wrong digit means an invoice that does not count, and an email to the supplier asking for a new one. Pastinha checks the NIF on every invoice you give it, every month.
